I love this story behind the song: many years ago (early 1971) I sent my first demo of the first pop song I wrote, RISE UP, to my agent in L.A. and a few other contacts in Los Angeles. Some time later, an interval long enough to raise my eyebrow at the least, Carpenters (theres no The) released GOODBYE TO LOVE, whose coda had pretty much the same chord progression as my verse. Of course I didnt flatter myself to think that Richard Carpenter had somehow heard my humble demo, except in my fantasy alternate life, which connected me to the birth of the power ballad, and made me imagine a hit on the charts: LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. This bit of imagery lurked in my memory bank with many other unwritten titles till I heard Julians production of LIFEBLOOD, and thought this would be the perfect producer for my fantasy world answer song to Richard Carpenters fantasy world appropriation of my first pop song. Time to bring LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME into the current moment. After that the song mostly wrote itself, borrowing from GOODBYE TO LOVE its gorgeous use of accidentals and its groundbreaking electric guitar solo, for which I could only leave a space on this live demo. I cant wait for Julian to fill in the missing component that brought the whole idea to the top of my mind.
INTRO: How could I
Let you walk away?
Not find the words
To make you stay, somehow?
Anyhow
VERSE 1: Now that I can finally see
That youre never coming back to me
One thought wont let me be
LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
Love will never be
Half so amazing
Love will never
Sweep in like a hurricane
All in vain, 'cause
New love
Will seem like a foolish game, love
Unworthy of the name, love
LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
(Interlude)
One thought keeps haunting me
LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
VERSE 2: Love will never be
Quite so astounding
Love will never
Take over my soul again
Not like then
New love
Will just be a foolish game, love
Unworthy of the name, love
LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
(Interlude)
And now that youre not coming back
Ring down the curtain
Fade to black
LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
(Guitar solo)
CODA: New love
Will just be a dying flame, love
Only myself to blame, love
LOVE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
